Homeownership creates wealth and financial well-being. Too many working families, especially families of color, are missing out. Current policies emphasize rental subsidies and fail to provide stable, affordable housing and create wealth. Homewisdom seeks to create a national homeownership strategy in conjunction with policymakers, subject matter experts, and neighborhoods across the country. All Americans should have the opportunity to build equity and narrow the racial wealth gap.

Publicly-subsidized rental apartments account for the vast majority of public spending on affordable housing. This emphasis is puzzling when you consider the tremendous financial benefits of homeownership, both to individual households and to the community. Homeownership often is the most affordable housing – both for families and for the public sector.
